چکیده

An Agent-Based Approach for Distributed Resource Allocations Antoine Nongaillard, PhD Concordia University Université Lille 1, 2009 Resource allocation problems have been widely studied according to various scenarios in literature. In such problems, a set of resources must be allocated to a set of agents, according to their own preferences. Self-organization issues in telecommunication, scheduling problems or supply chain management problems can be modeled using resource allocation problems. Such problems are usually solved bymeans of centralized techniques, where an omniscient entity determines how to optimally allocate resources. However, these solving methods are not well-adapted for applications where privacy is required. Moreover, several assumptions made are not always plausible, which may prevent their use in practice, especially in the context of agent societies. For instance, dynamic applications require adaptive solving processes, which can handle the evolution of initial data. Such techniques never consider restricted communication possibilities whereas many applications are based on them. For instance, in peer-to-peer networks, a peer can only communicate with a small subset of the systems. In this thesis, we focus ondistributedmethods to solve resource allocationproblems. Initial allocation evolves step by step thanks to local agent negotiations. We seek to provide agent behaviors leading negotiation processes to socially optimal allocations. In this work, resulting resource allocations can be viewed as emergent phenomena. We also identify parameters favoring the negotiation efficiency. We provide the negotiation settings to use when four different social welfare notions are considered. The original method proposed in this thesis is adaptive, anytime and can handle any restriction on agent communication possibilities.

A multi agent method for cell formation with uncertain situation, based on information theory

This paper assumes the cell formation problem as a distributed decision network. It proposes an approach based on application and extension of information theory concepts, in order to analyze informational complexity in an agent- based system, due to interdependence between agents. Based on this approach, new quantitative concepts and definitions are proposed in order to measure the amount of t...

Middleware QoS Agents and Native Kernel Schedulers for Adaptive Multimedia Services and Cluster Servers

Emerging operating systems allow user applications ne grain control over their own resource allocations. This provides a promising approach for user applications to meet their timing constraints. In a distributed environment , however, resource allocation decisions must also be made across machine and traditional OS boundaries. As portable and mobile software entities, middleware agents can man...

Resource Allocation Problems on Networks - Maximizing Social Welfare using an Agent-based Approach

Numerous applications can be formulated as an instance of resource allocation problems. Different kinds of solving techniques have been investigated, but the theoretical results cannot always be applied in practice due to inappropriate assumptions. Indeed, in these studies, agents are most of the time omniscient and/or have complete communication abilities. These hypotheses are not satisfied re...

The Atkinson Inequality Index in Multiagent Resource Allocation

We analyse the problem of finding an allocation of resources in a multiagent system that is as fair as possible in terms of minimising inequality between the utility levels enjoyed by the individual agents. We use the well-known Atkinson index to measure inequality and we focus on the distributed approach to multiagent resource allocation, where new allocations emerge as the result of a sequenc...
